MATCH REPORT: COVENTRY 4-0 PLYMOUTH

Frank Lampard's Sky Blues bounced back from a heavy defeat in true fashion with an impressive display, in front of a big crowd, with the helping hand of a poor away performance from Wayne Rooney's Plymouth Argyle at the CBS Arena this afternoon.

The Sky Blues opened the scoring after five minutes in front of a sell out crowd in Coventry. A well weighted cross from Ben Sheaf from just inside the penalty area was met at the far post by Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and he was able to head it past Daniel Grimshaw, who could've dealt with the goal better.

After twenty minutes on the clock, an inform Ephron Mason-Clark was able to beat the Argyle defenders and teed up Coventry born midfielder Josh Eccles to powerfully strike his second goal of the season from outside the penalty area.

Plymouth's day went from bad to worse in the 39th minute after a nicely lofted ball by Eccles was met by Mason-Clark who beat the Argyle back line and comfortably finished past Grimshaw who was left hopeless one on one by one of the most inform players in the Championship lately.

Just before the break, Coventry found their fourth goal of the half as the goals continued to flow. High pressure from Jack Rudoni forced a mistake from Adam Randall deep in their own half which Rudoni was able to lay it off for Eccles who fired home comfortably for his brace and the Sky Blues fourth of the game.

HALF TIME CCFC 4-0 PAFC

The second half began with a Sky Blue change as goalscorer Mason-Clark departed for midfielder Victor Torp due to a 'tight hamstring', according to Frank Lampard.

Plymouth struggled to get into the game at all and barely left their half throughout the half thanks to a professional performance from Lampard's Sky Blues throughout.

Grimshaw made an excellent save from an outstanding shot by Torp on the left hand side, just outside the penalty area but the keeper was at full strength denied the Sky Blues getting a fifth.

Plymouth, who were hampered by many injuries to key players, were left totally outplayed for almost the whole game and their away woes continued as pressure mounts on Rooney.

Callum Wright replaced an injured Mustapha Bundu in the first half but was sent off for the visitors in the 87th minute which rubbed suit into the wounds for Argyle after a late tackle on Joel Latibeaudiere in front of the dugouts.

FULL TIME: CCFC 4-0 PAFC

MOTM: Josh Eccles (CCFC)

A dominant and professional boxing day performance from the Sky Blues saw them rise to 14th in the Championship, as Plymouth remained 24th and rock bottom after another poor away performance which sums up their season so far under Wayne Rooney.

Match Report: Coventry City 3-2 WBA

Victor Torp was the hero for Coventry as he helped guide his side come back from a 2-0 deficit to beat West Brom 3-2 in a well-fought battle. The Danish midfielder scored the decisive goal in the Midlands derby which saw the Sky Blues extend their lead to seven points at the top of the Championship. It was the visitors who opened the scoring after nine minutes when Michael Johnston stole the ball from Jay Dasilva deep in his own half and found Aune Heggebo who slotted it home. The hosts had a chance to equalise through Torp after Ellis Simms held the ball well before setting up the 26-year-old who's strike smashed off the crossbar. Referee Andrew Kitchen had a testing time in the 31st minute trying to control the game after Jayson Molumby needlessly clattered into Ephron Mason-Clark by his own corner flag. The Sky Blues winger retaliated which caused a brawl between both sets of players and resulted in both players being booked for their part in it all. The Baggies doub...

Match Preview: Coventry City v Middlesbrough

The Sky Blues hosts Middlesbrough on Monday night at the CBS Arena in a top-of-the-table clash under the lights. The new league-leaders are looking to make it seven league wins on the bounce following victory at Brammall Lane last Monday. After dropping more points at home to Oxford last weekend, the Sky Blues slipped to second place and have questions to answer against an in-form Middlesbrough. Either one of these sides have been top of the Championship since gameweek four, but the Sky Blues led from the start of October until last Monday where Kim Hellberg's side stole top spot. When the sides met at the end of November at The Riverside, Frank Lampard's side took a convincing 4-2 win against former Sky Blues assistant manager and Boro interim Adi Viveash to go ten points clear. Following on from this, momentum has changed heavily, as it often does in this competitive league. Hellberg took over from Rob Edwards and has transformed their style of play and are now scoring goals ...
